Passivation

Passivation is the process of making a material "passive," usually by the deposition of a layer of oxide on its surface. This is most commonly an acid treatment (nitric and citric). It removes deposits of corrosive metals left by material forming processes and restores the passive oxide layer to the surface of metals—such as stainless steel or titanium alloys.
